Cristina Andres-Lacueva is Associate Professor at the Nutrition, Food Science & Gastronomy Department of the Pharmacy and Food Science Faculty at the University of Barcelona (UB) and coordinator of the BIOMARKERS AND NUTRITIONAL & FOOD METABOLOMICS research group (http://www.nutrimetabolomics.com/), with Quality Certification (2017SGR1546).

My scientific activity is mainly focused in dietary and nutritional assessment as the major determinants of human health. The alarming increase in diet-related diseases highlights the importance of accurate measurement of food intake to understand the links between diet and optimal health status or risk of disease. This activity has comprised two different purposes: The understanding of qualitative and quantitative links between diet, nutritional phenotype and risk factors for diet-related chronic diseases; and The discovery of proper and predictive biomarkers that characterize the trajectory from health to disease in the context of dietary intake and phenotypic changes. In this area, the main goals of my research have been: i) Applying intensively LC-MS driven untargeted and targeted metabolomics analysis to understand how new dietary biomarkers identified modulate diet-disease risk associations using pathway and network approaches; ii) The identification of robust “metabolic signatures of eating habits” for a range of foods of high public health significance; iii) To define and develop new methodological strategies for the biomarker discovery; iv) The development of an in-house human metabolome database and bioinformatic and biostatistic tools for the interpretation and identification of new biomarkers .

She has published more than 150 scientific articles in international journals JAMA Internal Medicine, Analytical Chemistry, Clinical Chemistry, J Proteome Research, J of Mass Spectrometry, Database, American Jour of Clinical Nutrition, J Endocrinology Articles, Neurobiology on Aging, An. José M Fernandez-Real

Dr. Fernández-Real received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from University of Barcelona, Spain. Since then, he has been researching in chronic inflammation, iron metabolism and insulin resistance.
He is Principal Investigator and member of the Steering Committee of the CIBERobn, a Network of Excellence in the Research of Obesity in Spain. He has extensive experience in managing multidisciplinary teams (University of Girona and Hospital of Girona) and coordinating groups of experts involving Evaluation of Research (as coordinator of the National Agency for Evaluation, in the Ministry of Science from the Government of Spain).

Graham Finlayson

Professor Finlayson specialises in two themes within the psychobiology of human motivation. Theme 1: In the study of Food Choice and Food Reward he has developed an international reputation as proprietor of a well-recognised behavioural task – the Leeds Food Preference Questionnaire. The task has been translated into 14 languages and enabled over 30 scientific collaborations in 16 countries. It has been used in major NIH (US), NWO (Netherlands) and EUFP7 funded research, fMRI studies, and in a number of different clinical populations including bariatric patients, eating disorder patients, Crohn’s Disease, malnourished elderly and mountaineers. Theme 2: In the study of Exercise and Appetite Control he is co-director of the Human Energy Balance and Appetite Research Laboratories. He coordinates an internationally renowned program of research involving the assessment of eating behaviour, physiology and metabolism in relation to body composition and energy balance.

Ujué Fresán

Ujué Fresán, Pharm MPH PhD. After obtaining her doctoral degree in Biomedicine, she has been working as a postdoctoral researcher in the University of Navarra (Spain) and in Loma Linda University (USA), specializing in sustainable diets. She is member of the Committee of Experts of the OMS for “Dietary Patterns for Health and Sustainability”. She is currently working as a researcher in the Instituto de Salud Pública y Laboral de Navarra, and is an Associate Professor of the Masters in Nutrition in both Universitat Oberta de Catalunya and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. She has received several awards from important scientific societies such as the Spanish and American Society for Nutrition.

Frank B Hu

Dr. Frank Hu is Chair of Department of Nutrition, Fredrick J. Stare Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He serves as Co-director of the Program in Obesity Epidemiology and Prevention at Harvard and Director of Boston Nutrition and Obesity Research Center (BNORC) Epidemiology and Genetics Core. His research is focused on nutritional and lifestyle epidemiology and prevention of obesity and cardiometabolic diseases, gene-environment interactions, and nutritional metabolomics. Dr. Hu is the recipient of the Kelly West Award for Outstanding Achievement in Epidemiology by the American Diabetes Association in 2010 and the American Heart Association’s Ancel Keys Memorial Lecturer in 2018. He has served on the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on Preventing the Global Epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease, the AHA/ACC Obesity Guideline Expert Panel, and the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, USDA/HHS. He has served on the editorial boards of Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, Diabetes Care, and Clinical Chemistry. Dr. Hu a member of the National Academy of Medicine.

David Jenkins

Dr. David J.A. Jenkins is an University Professor, and Canada Research Chair, in the Departments of Nutritional Sciences and Medicines, a staff physician in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, the Director of the Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Center, and a Scientist in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St. Michael’s Hospital.  He was educated at Oxford University, obtaining his DM, DPhil and DSc. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) and of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada.  He has served on committees in Canada and the United States that formulated nutritional guidelines for the treatment of diabetes and recommendations for fiber and macronutrient intake under the joint US-Canada DRI system (RDAs) of the National Academy of Sciences.  He also served as a member of Agriculture Canada’s Science Advisory Board (2004-2009) on the future direction of Canada’s agriculture and agricultural research. He has spent much time working with the food industry to develop products for the supermarket shelf and, for example, helped to initiate Loblaw’s ‘Too Good To Be True’ and most recently their popular “Blue Menu” line of products. His research area is the use of diet in the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia and diabetes.  He has over 300 original publications on these and related topics.  His team was the first to define and explore the concept of the glycemic index of foods and demonstrate the breadth of metabolic effects of viscous soluble fiber, including blood glucose and cholesterol lowering. His group developed the cholesterol lowering concept of the dietary portfolio that has entered guidelines in many jurisdictions (e.g. CCS, Heart UK etc.). He believes in the therapeutic value of plant based diets and that diets have to be environmentally sustainable.

Hana Kahleova

Hana Kahleova, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A.

Dr. Kahleova is director of clinical research for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. She has conducted several clinical trials, using a plant-based diet in the treatment of obesity, diabetes, and metabolic disease. Her research showed that a plant-based diet leads to a greater weight loss and improvement in metabolism, and addresses multiple mechanisms behind diabetes.

Her research proved that eating a large breakfast and lunch is more beneficial than eating six smaller meals a day for patients with type 2 diabetes. Her research on meal frequency and timing showed that eating less frequently, no snacking, consuming breakfast, and eating the largest meal in the morning may be effective methods for preventing long-term weight gain.

As a member of the American Diabetes Association and as a board member of the Diabetes and Nutrition Study Group of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, Dr. Kahleova is directly involved in the process of updating the nutritional recommendations for patients with diabetes.

Zhaoping Li

Dr. Zhaoping Li is a Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Clinical Nutrition in the Department of Medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine. She is also the Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition and has been Principal Investigator for over 50 investigator-initiated NIH and industry- sponsored clinical trials focusing on the role of nutrients on obesity, metabolism and chronic diseases.

Andre Marette

Dr. Marette is Professor of Medicine and researcher at Laval University where he holds a research Chair on type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. His research has advanced the understanding of the physiological and molecular mechanisms of insulin resistance and inflammation, and he is also studying how nutrition and food ingredients can modulate the gut microbiota to protect against obesity-linked metabolic diseases.  He has published over 250 papers, reviews and book chapters and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief for the Am J Physiol: Endo & Metab. and has authored two books entitled La Vérité sur le Sucre edited by VLB and Yogurt: Roles in Nutrition and Impacts on Health, edited by CRC press.

Anoop Misra

Prof. Anoop Misra is the Chairman, Fortis-CDOC Center of Excellence for Diabetes, Metabolic Diseases, and Endocrinology, and Director, National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation, and Diabetes Foundation (India). He has been a faculty at the Department of Endocrinology and Human Nutrition at the Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, USA, and former Professor of Internal Medicine, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. In January 2012, he has been conferred Honorary Professorship from Institute of Life Sciences, Hyderabad, with a mandate to steer Diabetes and Metabolic Research program. He is in Advisory Board Member of British Medical Journal.

Prof. Misra has more than 30 years of experience in teaching, service, research and community health intervention programs directed towards Asian Indians and particularly for underprivileged people. Prof. Misra is an advisory board member of National Program for Cancer, Diabetes, and CVD. He has been a member of World Health Organization and Indian Council of Medical Research Expert Groups for Childhood Obesity, Fatty Liver, Diabetes, and Gestational Diabetes and Member, Governing Committee, National Institute of Nutrition, National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau, and Expert Committee for Drugs Controller General of India, India.

Prof. Misra has published numerous scientific papers in the National and International journals. He has been awarded highest award for medicine in India Dr BC Roy award (2006) and prestigious National Honor, Padma Shree (2007). He has been conferred two National awards ‘Americare Award’ (Americare Foundation) and “Swastha Bharat Samman” (from Zee TV) for most outstanding contribution to Diabetes in India. He has received “Outstanding Investigator Award” from World India Diabetes Foundation in 2013.

He has given 24 named orations in India and neighbouring countries. He is member of editorial boards of 15 international journals, including Associate Editor of “Diabetic Medicine” and “Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome: Research and Reviews”. He has written three editorials for prestigious journal “The Lancet” and reviewer for more than 30 Journals including “Circulation” and “Journal Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism”.

Prof. Misra has several important scientific findings to his credit. He has lead countrywide consensus guidelines for obesity, the metabolic syndrome, physical activity and diets for Asian Indians. He has research collaborations with scientists from USA, UK, Australia, Netherlands, Canada, Malaysia, and Sweden. Project MARG and DISHAA, large nationwide intervention projects on nutrition and health of schoolchildren, has been conceptualized and carried out by his team and have been internationally lauded.

He has been personal physician to two former Prime Ministers of India.

Andreas F. H. Pfeiffer

Prof. Dr. Andreas F. H. Pfeiffer is Senior Professor Endocrinology & Diabetes at the Charité Universitaetsmedizin Berlin. His interests cover dietary interventions for treatment and prevention of type 2 diabetes.  Hormonal and nutritional interplay in metabolism, focus on NAFLD / NASH, genetic and epigenetic factors in metabolic regulation. He coauthored over 400 peer reviewed publications.

Hubert Preissl

Hubert Preissl studied Physics and did his PhD at the Max-Planck Institute for biological Cybernetics in Tübingen. Afterwards he led the magnetoencephalography Center at the University of Tübingen and performed clinical and basic science brain imaging studies. Since 2000 he focused on the effect of metabolic signals in particular insulin on brain function. In addition he implemented the first dedicated fetal magnetoencephalographic system in Europe and investigated the development of human brain and autonomic nervous function in human fetuses and its possible alterations by the metabolic status of the mother. He currently holds a Professorship at the University of Tübingen on central nervous function and type 2 diabetes and heads the Metabolic Neuroimaging group at the Institute for diabetes research and metabolic diseases at the University of Tübingen of the Helmholtz Center Munich.

Crystal Ramsay

Dr Crystal Haskell-Ramsay is Associate Professor of Biological Psychology at Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne. Her research focuses on the impact of nutritional interventions on cognition and mood, as well as exploring the physiological mechanisms underlying such effects. Crystal has over 15 years’ experience in the assessment of cognitive performance, with her early work exploring the neurocognitive effects of caffeinated plants. Her current research interests lie primarily in the biobehavioural effects of (poly)phenolic compounds from sources including coffee, cocoa, berries and nut.

Gabriele Riccardi

Gabriele Riccardi
Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, Federico II University,  Naples, Italy
graduated with honors in Medicine at the University of Naples; then he spent two years as Visiting Scientist at the King Gustav V Research Institute, Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm. He has been President of the Italian Diabetes Society and was awarded the Celso Prize for his outstanding contribution to diabetes research.

GR has extensive experience in the field of nutrition and metabolic diseases (diabetes mellitus, lipid disorders, metabolic syndrome). He has been Editor-in-Chief of Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases, an international scientific journal published by Elsevier.
He is author of over 400 in extenso peer reviewed publications (total impact factor > 600) which have been cited over 15000 times. H-Index= 60.

Joan Sabaté

Joan Sabaté MD, DrPH, is Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at Loma Linda University School of Public Health where he directs the Center for Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyles. Dr. Sabaté was the principal investigator of a nutrition intervention trial that directly linked the consumption of walnuts to significant reductions in serum cholesterol, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1993, and is also co-investigator of the Adventist Health Studies prospective epidemiological studies relating dietary intake with health outcomes that have the largest cohort of vegetarians.  For the past 10 years he has been the principal investigator of many clinical trials investigating the health effects of nuts and other plant foods. Dr. Sabaté has also directed the Environmental Nutrition research program at the Loma Linda University School of Public Health that focuses on sustainable diets and explores the interrelationships between the environmental and health impacts of food choices, and ultimately seeks to improve the sustainability, health and equity of food systems.

Jordi Salas-Salvadó

Currently, he is Professor in Nutrition and Bromatology and Director of the Human Nutrition Unit, Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of the Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and Clinical Head of the Nutrition Unit of the Internal Medicine Service of the University Hospital Sant Joan de Reus (HUSJR). However, he held positions in other important entities such as IIPSV, CIBERobn, INC, CCNIEC, RIBESMET, CODINUCAT and ACSA.

In last years, Dr. Salas-Salvadó’s expertise and research lines focused on human clinical trials evaluating the effect of diets and dietary compounds on obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Since 2005, he is one of the leaders of the PREDIMED study, a landmark trial evaluating the effect of the Mediterranean Diet on the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. He is the Director and Chair of the Steering Committee of the PREDIMED-PLUS study, an ongoing multi-centre, randomised, primary prevention trial on 6,900 overweight or obese participants (age 55-75 years) with metabolic syndrome. The project aims to determine the effects on cardiovascular disease events and mortality, adiposity, cardiovascular risk factors and quality of life, of an intensive weight loss intervention based on a traditional hypocaloric Mediterranean Diet, physical activity promotion and behavioral support compared to a less intensive program using Mediterranean Diet (without energy restriction nor physical activity). Recruitment started in September 2013 and ended in November 2016. The results will be available in 2022.

Since 1983 Dr. Salas-Salvadó has directed more than 25 research projects funded by public agencies (DGICYT, the Ibero-American Cooperation Institute, the Carlos III Health Institute - FIS, PROFIT, CICYT and the European Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition project) and 25 projects in collaboration with pharmaceutical industries and food industries. He has also participated as a Co-Investigator and as a Co-Principal Investigator in other projects funded by the Carlos III Health Institute - FIS, the European Commission, the National Institute of Health (USA) and the Institute of Health Studies of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

He has published more than 500 original articles in national and international peer-reviewed and indexed journals, as well as numerous reviews and editorials, accumulating an impact factor of 2.276, a factor H: 62 and more than 16.000 citations. He is a Clarivate Analytics high citated investigator. He is the editor of 7 books and the co-author of more than 65 other books. He has presented more than 450 communications in national and international conferences.

Sabita Soedamah-Muthu

Dr. Sabita Soedamah-Muthu is currently a full Associate Professor Diabetes Epidemiology at Tilburg University, Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Center of Research on Psychology in Somatic Diseases (CORPS), Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology, Tilburg, the Netherlands. She also has been appointed as a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Reading, Reading, United Kingdom, in the School of Agriculture, Policy and Development and institute for Food, Nutrition and Health. Her main research domains are: Epidemiology, Nutrition, Diabetes, Cardiovascular diseases.

She completed her MSc (1996) degree in Biomedical Health Sciences at the Radboud University Nijmegen and her PhD (2003) degree in Epidemiology, University College London, United Kingdom. For her PhD thesis, she studied the risk of coronary heart disease in type 1 diabetes, mainly focused on inflammatory markers and lipoprotein subclasses. She obtained funding for her PhD by the Graduate School Research Scholarship, University College London. Her current appointment at the universities of Tilburg and Reading allows her to link her experience in clinical epidemiology, nutritional epidemiology with psychological interventions. She carried out several meta-analyses and initiated new projects to study nutritional factors (from nutrients, foods and dietary patterns) in the development of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Her main topics, are sugars, fibre, dairy products and dietary patterns. She has many national and international collaborations (Europe, USA, Australia) and access to several large cohort studies and clinical trials. She obtained an International Award, the Wiebe Visser International Dairy Nutrition Prize, for her research on dairy products. So far, all her work led to >112 full-text publications with a web of science H-index of 31. A combination of hypothesis-driven epidemiological studies and good understanding of mechanisms is essential to progress scientific knowledge.
